FYI: In the absence of a will, an unmarried person's estate goes to the closest blood relative or to the state. Lovers and friends receive nothing. Similarly, if an unmarried person is incapacitated, the state will grant control of his/her financial and medical affairs to a relative unless s/he has made legal provisions to prevent this. Lesbian/gay individuals who, in the event of their death, would wish to pass on their estates to lovers and friends should make a will. Additionally, by preparing a durable power-of-attorney, one may authorize a lover or friend to handle his/her financial affairs in the event that s/he becomes incapacitated. With additional language, the person can also be authorized to handle medical decisions.
